Review
by Kozo: |
This early film from Tony Au features Chow Yun-Fat in
one of his only costume roles. He’s Soo Young, a famous
composer who collapses during a recital when he dreams
of a resurfacing Terracotta Warrior that looks just
like him. Tended to by his loving girlfriend Ah Lai
(Cher Yeung), he is baffled by the vision as well as
recurring memories of a woman from the Qin Dynasty.
Meanwhle, Yuet-Heung (Brigitte
Lin) dreams of a Chinese soldier making love to her
during the same time period. Obviously, the two are
past lovers whose connection is only coming to light
now, over two thousand years after their untimely deaths.
The mystery of how and why they died unfolds when the
two find one another and begin a passionate affair.
Things get complicated when the location of the Terracotta
Warrior is revealed. Also, there’s Ah Lai, who won’t
let Soo Young go quietly.
This is a beautifully-staged
drama made all the better by the simple, yet effective
production design from William Cheung Suk-Ping. However,
the film may be too beautiful. It’s certainly affecting,
but it’s so beautiful and emotionally overwrought that
the result is oddly sterile - like you’re watching a
perfectly arranged flower vase. On the plus side, the
love scenes are staged with an eroticism seldom seen
in serious Hong Kong films, and Chow and Lin are both
excellent. (Kozo 1998) |
