The
Skinny: |
Useless
and unnecessary retread of "A Star is Born." At the
very least, the actors are appealing though that can only get
you so far. |

Review
by Kozo: |
Restrained but still cheesy drama about a washed-up music producer
(Alex Fong) who falls for a waitress (the winning Yoyo Mung)
and proceeds to make her a star, albeit without his actual songwriting.
It seems his stuff is labeled as “out of date” and is routinely
rejected despite his efforts. Eventually, ego does him in and
we must witness as he shuns happiness only to want it back.
Then the usual happens to make everything teary.
This is really a non-factor of a movie
loaded with overused plot devices. The story of the self-destructive
artist who loses his true love is a film staple and has touched
many a Hong Kong flick (as well as many an American one). Thankfully,
the actors are appealing. Alex Fong is always welcome, though
he’s starting to resemble a Chinese Richard Gere. Yoyo Mung
has shown real flashes of talent. If she can gain more confidence
then she could be leading lady material. One hopes she would
choose better material, though. (Kozo 2000) |
