Review
by Kozo: |
Early Chow Yun-Fat flick features a pre-John Woo display of
unparalleled charisma. Chow is Fay, who befriends Keung (Alex
Man) in wartime Hong Kong. Fay is heavily principled, but
not above using guile and deception to act out his noble intentions.
He tags along with Keung, despite Keung’s essential immaturity,
and ignores the burgeoning romance between he and Keung’s
fiancée Nam (Cecilia Yip). When the Japanese hit, Keung decides
to stay against the better judgment of Fay and Nam. Thanks
to Keung, they all stay and things go from bad to worse. Fay
joins the Japanese as a Chinese recruit, much to the dismay
of his friends. However, Fay's plan is to earn the trust of
the Japanese just so he can keep his friends alive. His plan
works, but Keung gets in way over his head, and Fay must decide
how much he's willing to sacrifice for honor and righteousness. This
is a fine film from director Leung Po-Chi, with a good story,
believable characters, and a towering central performance
from Chow Yun-Fat. He was rewarded with Taiwan’s Golden Horse
award for Best Actor that year. Cecilia Yip is wonderful as
the emotionally damaged Nam. Highly recommended for fans of
Chow Yun-Fat. (Kozo 1996) |
