Wong Wai-Man was born on May 21, 1969. In the early nineties he somehow
ended up as a DJ after going to HK Commercial Radio headquarters to
pick up a prize he won through a radio contest. That became his full-time
job until he officially left the radio station in 1998. Sometime during
his stint as a DJ, Wong started writing song lyrics and appearing
in films. He’s taken some rather quirky movie roles over the years,
like the “Foster Mother” to Sammi Cheng in Killing Me Tenderly
(1997), and was more recently cast as Cecilia Cheung’s traditional
older brother in The Lion Roars (2002). In addition, he had
a small cameo in Tsui Hark’s Knock Off (1998) and the HKMDB
lists him as one of the co-writers for Sleeping With the Dead
            (2002).

But while Wong's film roles are generally
of a comedic nature, his best song lyrics are about raw emotion and
heartbreak. They range from cheeky and unconventional, like Tat Ming
Pair’s “A Forbidden Fruit a Day”, to desperately sad and fragile,
like Candy Lo’s “Garbage”. His landmark work is likely Amanda Lee’s
“(You Will Not Have) A Happy Ending”, a scathing and violent song
to an ex-lover punctuated with the image of a dagger through the heart.
The song put both Wong and Lee onto the musical map and he’s since
become one of the most prolific and popular HK lyricists behind Lin
Xi (AKA: Lam Jik). (Yinique 2003) |
