The
Skinny: |
Hugely
esoteric but still quite funny comedy from Jeff Lau. Knowledge
of sixties Hong Kong Cinema is a must to get the full effect,
but you might get some laughs anyway. |

Review
by Kozo: |
This wacky and weird flick from director Jeff Lau is a modern
send-up of the popular Black Rose film serials from
the late sixties. The Black Rose was a costumed female crime-fighter
who roamed Hong Kong in black spandex. Now she’s back, and
under investigation by a fey cop (Tony Leung Ka-Fai, in a
parody of old school actor Lui Kei). However, who exactly
is the Black Rose? Is it Maggie Siu? Or Teresa Mo? And what
about Fung Bo-Bo? Does it matter? Of course not. All that
matters are wacky and weird musical sequences and silliness
aplenty. If that's what you're looking for then you've come
to right place.
Loaded with in-jokes, this film
is enjoyable for those who understand what’s going on or those
who just like crazy wacky stuff. I would probably be one of
the latter, as I couldn't even pretend to understand the history
behind the whole Black Rose thing. At the very least, Tony
Leung Ka-Fai's comedic performance is worth mondo laughs.
This movie may lose some people, but it nonetheless possesses
its own unique sensibilities and an inexplicable bizarre charm.
