Review
by Kozo: |
A misleading title is the first problem for this offbeat but
still tepid drama about a cop and the women in his life. The
lead is Roy Cheung Yiu-Yeung, who has gotten better acting
cred of late thanks to good supporting turns in Beast Cops,
The Mission, and Jiang Hu – The Triad Zone.
Here he’s an obsessed cop who spends all his time on the beat
and away from his wife (Pinky Cheung). Meanwhile, a bizarre
murder case happens at their old high school. Teacher Michael
Tong is found killed and stuffed into the school’s time capsule.
Among the suspects is Stephanie Che Yuen-Yuen, who was Tong’s
girlfriend. Cheung believes she’s innocent, and as he begins
a friendship with her the two begin to fall in love.
After that, the usual sort of cop
soap opera plot devices are thrown in, including the bitter
wife, jealous lover/boyfriend, etc. Eventually the plot turns
up some interesting twists, but it’s all for nothing other
than a perfunctory cop exercise that leads us nowhere we haven’t
been before. When the final twist is thrown at us, a good
question to ask would be: “Why?” Other than aiming for random
nihilism or simply trying to jack over the audience, the movie
accomplishes nothing novel. At the very least, I’d hope that
Stephanie Che can find better projects to showcase her presence.
Roy Cheung does fine, but he’s still a better supporting performer
than a lead. (Kozo 2001) |
