Review
by Kozo: |
This
action-comedy features talented actors and comely females...and
it still can’t survive a truly bizarre script and plot. Written
by Dayo Wong, it’s about a bunch of Hong Kong resident who
go on a bus tour to Thailand and get mixed up with counterfeiters
who’re chasing an underage hooker (Gloria Yip) who stole their
bogus loot. Waise Lee is the tour guide, a loopy priest who’s
preoccupied with changing money. Lau Ching-Wan does a Travis
Bickle impression as a jaded taxi driver who’s sweet on teacher
Loletta Lee. Cynthia Khan is a kick-butt meter maid, and Fennie
Yuen is a money grubbing beautician. Dayo Wong is a wacky
ex-triad.
The subtitles make absolutely
no sense, a problem which is compounded by the incredibly
inane stuff happening onscreen. Example: Fennie has Dayo pimp
her out in Thailand to see what kind of price she’d fetch.
Why this happens, no one knows. There is a genuine sort of
amusement to seeing big stars act strange, but while many
of these are welcome faces, none are really big stars (at
least not until later, when Lau Ching-Wan would actually learn
how to carry a movie). Amusing, but only occasionally. And
probably not worth breaking your back to find. (Kozo 1997) |
