The
Skinny: |
The
cast makes the film look like a winner. The film makes the
cast look stupid for signing on. A massive, massive failure.
No words could describe our disappointment. |

Review
by Kozo: |
This star-powered teaming of
two wuxia queens (Brigitte Lin and Cheung Man) and the Mainland's
top actress (Gong Li) seemed like a smart move. The project
was a special effects-laden flying kung-fu fest inspired by
the work of popular writer Jin Yong. The result: mind-numbingly
bad. The film is unfortunately undone by poor storytelling,
incomprehensible plotting, lousy direction and just plain
bad judgment. The three big stars all spend time as allies
and enemies in a plot about warring factions, secret techniques
and old rivalries. Further plot description would be impossible,
as the filmmakers did their best to make sure the audience
would be completely lost. If you can find somebody who can
tell you what happened in this film and you may have won the
lottery. Good costumes, decent settings and adequate special
effects help this effort and the whole thing is in Dolby Surround
(wow!). Still, the below-average everything else dooms the
picture to nothing more than a curiosity for fans of the three
big actresses. If this film helped kill the wuxia genre then
I can understand why. (Kozo 1996/1997) |
