Occasionally
entertaining swordplay flick that's weighed down by too many

Review
by Kozo: |
A confusing and somewhat alienating costume period flick,
The Sword Stained with Royal Blood isn’t bad at all,
but it isn’t superb either. Danny Lee (and his stunt double)
is Golden Snake Man, who’s out to find his long lost love,
who’s married to Tsui Kam-Kong. Complicating things are local
constable Yuen Biao, cute princess Cheung Man and her master
Ng Man-Tat.
Loaded with B-grade stars, flying
swords, and lots of double crosses, it takes a scorecard to
figure out what the hell is happening. I couldn’t. Anita Yuen
makes one of her few wuxia appearances as Jade Ho, an evil
member of the Poison Sect. What makes this film especially
noteworthy is that Danny Lee does the full wuxia thing, with
long hair and the full costume. That he’s totally unfit for
this sort of film provides most of the real pleasure. Check
out the cutaway head shots and quick-cut stunt-double action!
If you’re a fan of costumed swordplay and confusing plots
are tolerable for you, then this is your movie. (Kozo 1995) |
