A typical eighties
product, this action-comedy featuring Jackie Chan, Yuen
Biao, and Sammo Hung is as slapdash and cheesy as they
come. And as entertaining, too. Thomas (Jackie Chan) and David
(Yuen Biao) are a couple of buddies living in Spain,
where they spend their time practicing kung-fu and running
their pet business: a fast food truck. When a beautiful
pickpocket named Sylvia (former Miss Spain Lola Forner)
runs off with their dough, the two find themselves embroiled
in an adventure that could only exist in HK Cinema.
Our heroes befriend Sylvia
despite her illicit ways, and make her one of their
motley crew. However, various shady
factions are after her for reasons unknown - and one
of the primary pursuers is their old buddy Moby (Sammo
Hung), a wacky private investigator who’s chasing Sylvia
for unknown employers.
The hows and whys of the plot
mean very little. It’s just an excuse for our heroes
to run all over Spain in a variety of excellent action
sequences, including some of the best fights Jackie
Chan has ever participated in. His duel with Benny Urquidez,
in particular, is astounding in its use of mano-a-mano fighting
instead of Chan's usual prop-filled antics. Never mind
that everyone in Spain speaks Cantonese - if you must,
enjoy this picture for the simple reason that they don’t
make ‘em like this anymore. (Kozo 1995/1997) |
