The
supposed last in Wong Jing’s fetid Raped by an Angel series is by far the most amusingly elaborate. The previous
films had rapists who were at the top of their game,
devising clever ways to rape their desired targets.
Well, this time, there are THREE rapists, and they band
together to form a “union.” They’re led by Ben Ng as
an ex-CIA spook who uses the latest in miniature technology
to peep and prod into the lives of his victims, notably
lovely novelist Suki Kwan Sau-Mei. He starts by taking
on her friend, and then moves on Kwan using his rapist
buddies as helpers. The other two are instinct rapers
who just go for it - they’re not like Ben, whose most
important tool is his intellect.
All I can say is: big
friggin’ deal. His savvy wouldn’t be of any use if it
weren’t for the sheer inanity of the ladies or the poor
plotting by Grand Wizard Wong Jing. I don’t really think
it matters to discuss the merits of this series - it’s
all just cheesy exploitation which has never risen above
its genre. Despite clever jokes and an appearance by
Anthony Wong as the Hannibal Lecter of rapists, you
can’t really say this is better or worse than the rest.
This is a waste of time by any measure, though at this
point it seems I’ll watch anything. Athena Chu reprises
her role as the cop who was terrorized in #2, which
makes for the film’s best joke. (Kozo 1999) |
