The Skinny: Yes, another Troublesome Night movie. It's actually not so bad as a standalone film, though it shines compared to most of the others.
Review
by Kozo:
For their next trick, producer Nam Yin and Herman Yau reinvent the Troublesome Night series as a standard horror flick. This latest installment has only one storyline and a decided lack of jokes. However, it’s still interesting and proves to be the most creepy installment yet.
Standard leading man Louis Koo Tin-Lok is Jat, a cop who’s drawn into a mysterious case when two reporters for a tabloid rag are assaulted. One dies, but the other is hospitalized and all signs point toward something supernatural. It seems that four years prior, the two reporters covered the suicide of young model Kwok (Gigi Lai). Once the next reporter is offed, Jat and his partners (including Simon Lui) must find the other implicated parties and ascertain why this reporter rub-out is happening. And worse, Jat himself may be due for execution - and he can’t figure out why.
Obviously someone watched The Ring and decided that good atmosphere and tension are pretty darn scary, ‘cause that’s exactly what Herman Yau does to get the film moving. Troublesome Night 6 is nowhere near as intense as The Blair Witch Project, but it works surprisingly well as a minor spine tingler. The cinematography, set design, and pacing all lend itself to minor amounts of suspense and the performances are all appropriate. Like the others in the series, the payoff is ultimately karmic (perhaps explaining why the series is called “Yin Yang Road” in Chinese), and the plot itself is incredibly simple. Still, as a member of the series the simplicity more than works. Nothing earth-shattering occurs here, just good genre exercise stuff.
