Lui Yu-Yeung is trying to take over Hong Kong... well
their entertainment industry anyways. Born in Hong Kong
on July 8th, 1964, Lui spent time overseas in North America
before returning home and becoming a DJ and an actor at
TVB. He started acting in movies in 1991 and has been
gradually spreading his creative tentacles ever since,
composing music, writing scripts and starting his own
production company, Buddy Film Creative Workshop Limited,
in 2000.
All told, Lui has been in
nearly 100 films (20 in just 1999), most of them low budget,
forgettable fare. Some notable entries in his filmography
are Play with Strangers (2000), Headlines (2001) and a documentary called How to Get Rich by
Fung Shui (1998). Some of the films in which Lui acted
and co-wrote are Killer (2000), Paramount Motel (2000), and Esprit D’Amour (2001). He also shared
co-writing credits on The Replacement Suspects (2001),
though the film was largely a rip-off of the American
thriller Albino Alligator (1996).
Without a doubt, Lui has been
a major player in the recent resurgence of Hong Kong horror
films. He has come to be known as the Ghost King, thanks
in large part to appearances in 11 of the 17 (and counting) Troublesome Night films. Appearing in numerous
horror films, and penning a number of ghost novels, have
made Lui as as identifiable with the supernatural as Helena
Law Lan. (Yinique 2003) |
