Review
by Kozo: |
The first film from writer Abe Kwong is a low-key, yet surprisingly
engaging comedy. Cheung Tat-Ming is Lee Ka-Sing (get it?), a mousy
bank clerk who admires his co-worker (Michelle Wong), and generally
does little to disturb others. One day a debt collector (the ubiquitous
Bobby Yip) turns up to collect 3 million from Lee, which was borrowed
by an acquaintance.
Having no option, Lee finds himself contemplating
the solution of a low-rent rascal nicknamed Ba Ba (as in “father”).
Played by Dayo Wong, Ba Ba is a big talking layabout who’s losing
his girlfriend (Angela Tong) and never completes anything he starts.
A robbery is the perfect solution for the two. One gets the money,
the other completes a goal, and both come out ahead in the self-esteem
department.
While that message is touted quite prominently,
it is thankfully shown through incident rather than out-and-out
verbal soul-searching. Also, there’s time for lots of funny stuff.
While this isn’t a belly-laugh kind of film, the laid-back tone
and solid performances make for a good time. Cheung Tat-Ming and
Dayo Wong display an obvious chemistry, and whatever mugging they
do is offset by their crack comic timing.
The film also contains a few HK-specific
cheesy moments, but even those are played for laughs. The robbery
itself is a hilarious set piece capped by Law Lan’s appearance as
the policewoman who wouldn’t quit. This is a genuine sleeper that
entertains without insulting. (Kozo 1998) |
