The man who plays cops, Danny Lee, returns in this 1988 vehicle
directed by pal Parkman Wong (they co-starred in Parking
Service). Lee is a maverick cop who “breaks all the rules!™”
Despite his stellar record and cool shades, he’s somewhat
of an outcast in the squad room due to the meddling of the
new chief inspector, who's seriously anal-retentive. During
their inter-squad battles, they clash over a cheap punk of
a car thief (Stephen Chow, in a pre-superstar performance)
who Lee captured. Lee wants to use Chow to get to principled
bad guy Shing Fui-On and his lesser, more obnoxious partner
Tommy Wong.
It turns out these guys are just
a couple of bank robbers, and nothing more exciting. Ho hum.
Not exactly a compelling bunch of bad guys. Still, the heart
of the picture is the relationship between Lee and Chow, who
slowly grows to trust him. The film has decent action and
is fairly enjoyable, but it is still mostly formula. Danny
Lee plays Danny Lee again. Chow’s performance is much better,
especially in light of his current superstar status. He demonstrates
a range in this picture that it seems everyone forgot he possessed.
He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 1988 Hong
Kong Film Awards, but lost to Jacky Cheung from As Tears
Go By. (Kozo 1997) |
