Review
by Kozo: |
This meandering, plotless movie about the trials of a young teacher
(Jan Lam) is a surprisingly effective, gentle comedy. Instead of
the expected wacky hijinks, director Wilson Yip and producer/writer
Vincent Kok go for more subdued laughs.
Jan Lam is Lam, a passionless teacher who
disregards the daily bell. He lives with fellow teacher and single
parent Anthony Wong, and the two share the same lackadaisical approach
to teaching. Things change with the arrival of Miss Lee (newcomer
Cathy Tsui), who injects new passion into their lives. Along the
way, there are some believably handled situations, including a young
student’s crush on Lam and his budding romance with Miss Lee.
Nothing really exciting happens in this
film (the most pivotal event is a lucky draw at a supermarket),
but the acting and pacing are excellent. Jan Lam underplays his
role extremely well. It's possible that he could be the most talented
member of Soft/Hard (the other member being Eric Kot Man-Fai). Cathy
Tsui is a charming new presence, and her lisping, accented Cantonese
is actually tolerable. The great Anthony Wong is dependable as always
(though he seems to be a bit puffier than usual in this film). The
film tends to be off-kilter and quirky, but director Yip's handling
of the mundane subject matter grounds the film in a pleasant, familiar
reality. An enjoyable and underrated little flick. (Kozo 1997) |
